You must stop completely before entering the major road.

What it means in practice

The Stop sign is a red octagon with a white border and is the only regulatory sign of that shape, so it can still be recognised if it is dirty or covered in snow. You must come to a complete stop at the sign or at the stop line, however quiet the road looks, and only move off when it is safe.
